The UC Cancer Center consists of research-based and patient-care-based
facilities. Research-based facilities are located throughout the greater
Cincinnati area.
- The
Barrett Center at University Hospital
The cornerstone of the UC Cancer Center and the region’s
major cancer treatment. The Charles M. Barrett Cancer Center has
a long-standing reputation for providing the most advanced and
complete range of cancer services available in the region. The
Barrett Center is a unique facility offering screening, diagnosis
and treatment for all types of cancer at one central, convenient
location. The Barrett Center has consistently been ranked among
the best in the US News and World Report guide to "America’s
Best Hospitals."
- UC’s Vontz
Center for Molecular Studies
Researchers at the Vontz Center focus on the discovery and understanding
of the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms that contribute
to the development and progression of diseases such as cancer,
brain and nervous system disorders, diabetes and obesity. The
Vontz Center is home to many core facilities for researchers at
the UC Medical Center.
- Genome Research
Institute
The Genome Research Institute was established as a center dedicated
to elucidating disease mechanisms by uniting the research strengths
of both the academic and pharmaceutical realms. Research programs
at the Institute utilize the application of state-of-the-art modern
molecular technologies to understand disease processes. Current
major focus areas are obesity/diabetes, vascular biology, metabolic
diseases, and cancer.
- Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center
The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation, founded
in 1931, is one of the most outstanding pediatric research institutions
in the nation. The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research scientists
have been responsible for such breakthrough discoveries as the
Sabin oral polio vaccine, the first practical heart-lung machine
that made open heart surgery possible, and discovery of key ingredients
of the surfactant preparation used throughout the world to save
the lives of thousands of infants each year.
- Cincinnati
VA Medical Center
The Cincinnati VA Medical Center ( CVAMC ) has been closely affiliated
with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and University
Health Care Center since the VA's opening in 1955. The Cincinnati
VA has been and remains a major partner in medical education.
They support clinical rotations for medical students, residents,
fellows, student nurses, in addition to many other health career
trainees. Most of the clinical staff have appointments at the
University of Cincinnati within the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing,
and within other Colleges of the University. The CVAMC is part
of Veterans Affairs VISN 10's health provider network. They are
a member of the Southwest Oncology Study Group. This provides
the Cincinnati VA the opportunity to bridge with cancer experts
from around the United States as well as to support clinical investigational
treatment protocols which are designed to answer significant questions
relative to better ways to treat neoplastic diseases. The Cincinnati
VA is supported by multiple pharmaceutical firms which enable
us to clinically test newer drugs and different combinations of
drugs for their effectiveness against selected hematological and
oncological diseases. The Section is also supported by grants
from the NIH and VA permitting us to study the biology of selected
hematological diseases.
- The
Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati
Health Alliance cancer centers, staff and physicians offer a multidisciplinary
approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer
including everything from clinical trials to cancer information
to support groups.
- Hoxworth
Blood Center
Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati Medical Center,
is the only blood center for the greater Cincinnati area. Serving
a 15-county area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Hoxworth collects,
tests, processes and distributes blood and blood components to
27 hospitals and medical centers.
- UC Medical
Center
The University of Cincinnati is one of America's leading academic
health centers. Excellence in education, patient care, and research
draws students, researchers, physicians and patients from all
over the world to take advantage of many unique opportunities.
Students and faculty at UC create and learn in an exciting and
supportive environment on the cutting edge of Biomedical Science.
